Alex Kaufman

Artist | Designer | Creative Thinker

Alex Kaufman is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in St. Petersburg, Florida, whose practice explores the intersection of art, engineering, architecture, and the human experience. Specializing in public art, sculpture, mosaics, and immersive installations, his work seeks to transform everyday environments into places of wonder, curiosity, joy, and connection.

With a background in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Florida and over a decade of experience in large-scale public art, Kaufman brings a unique combination of artistic imagination and technical expertise to his practice. His work spans an expansive range of materials and disciplines, from monumental metal sculptures and intricate mosaics to interactive environments that explore light, color, and perception. Throughout his career, he has contributed to the conceptual development, engineering, and design of 27 public sculptures representing approximately $5 million in commissioned artwork.

An Art Form for Every Place

At the heart of Kaufman’s practice is a belief that the most meaningful public art emerges from a dialogue with its surroundings. Rather than approaching every project with a predetermined style or medium, he begins with the place itself: its history, architecture, environment, community, and the experiences of those who inhabit it.

Each site presents a unique creative puzzle, one in which the solution is not necessarily a particular sculpture or material, but an artistic experience that feels inseparable from its setting. The challenge is to discover the right relationship between concept, form, material, and place.

This philosophy has led Kaufman to embrace an interdisciplinary approach, allowing the needs and opportunities of each project to guide its artistic expression. Whether through the permanence of stone, the reflectivity of metal, the vibrant intricacy of mosaic, or the ephemeral beauty of light, the medium becomes part of the story rather than simply a means of constructing it.

The Art of Public Space

Kaufman believes public art holds a particularly meaningful place in society because of its accessibility. Unlike art encountered within the walls of a museum or gallery, public art becomes part of everyday life. It belongs to the shared experience of a community, encountered not only by those seeking art, but by anyone passing through.

A successful public artwork should do more than occupy a space or provide visual decoration. It should contribute something meaningful to its environment, creating a sense of identity, inviting interaction, inspiring curiosity, or offering a moment of unexpected delight.

He is particularly drawn to the idea that public art can become an old friend within a community: a familiar landmark people return to, a place where memories accumulate, and something that continues to reveal itself through repeated encounters.

While rooted in the character of its location, Kaufman believes great public art should also possess the power to surprise. It should feel both as though it belongs exactly where it stands and as though something extraordinary has happened there.

Imagination Meets Engineering

Kaufman’s background in engineering informs his creative process without defining its limits. He views technical knowledge not as a constraint on artistic expression, but as a means of expanding what is possible.

Digital modeling, parametric design, advanced fabrication, and material experimentation allow him to explore forms and experiences that might otherwise remain imaginary. From the earliest conceptual sketches through fabrication and installation, he approaches the artistic and technical dimensions of a project as interconnected parts of the same creative process.

This marriage of imagination and engineering allows ambitious ideas to become enduring, tangible experiences, particularly in public environments where beauty, safety, durability, and thoughtful integration must coexist.

Creating Wonder

Ultimately, Kaufman’s work is driven by a fascination with the extraordinary possibilities hidden within ordinary places.

He believes art has the power to alter how we experience the world, even if only for a moment. A reflection can transform our perception of space. A mosaic can turn a sidewalk into a journey of discovery. A sculpture can become a symbol of collective identity. An unexpected encounter with beauty can interrupt the familiar rhythm of daily life.

Through his work, Kaufman seeks to create these moments of transformation, bringing imagination into the built environment and offering people new ways to experience the places they share.

His guiding philosophy is simple: the most successful public art doesn’t merely exist in a place. It becomes part of what makes that place extraordinary.
